Preface: Why This Book? xxv 1. A Synthesis: What Is the Future for Coasts, Estuaries, Deltas and Other Transitional Habitats in and Beyond? Michael Elliott, John W. Day, Ramesh Ramachandran, Eric Wolanski 1 Introduction 1 2 Setting the Scene: The DAPSI(W)R(M) Framework 2 3 Current Status of Estuarine and Coastal Ecosystems 4 Estuaries 4. Bird Life of Coasts and Estuaries describes the bird life of the British coastline and adjacent off-shore waters from an ecological point of view, using information from research to show how bird distribution and abundance are related to important environmental variables such as marine currents, weather, coastal landform and the influence of man.

The book furnishes a basic understanding of the tectonic framework, hydrographic regime, climatic setting, and geologic materials that determine the morphology of a coast. Individual chapters are devoted to major coastal environments such as barriers, tidal inlets, marshes, estuaries, lagoons, deltas, glaciated coasts, rocky coasts and many others. Estuaries are very important to the lives of many animal species. They are often called the “nurseries of the sea” because numerous animal species rely on estuaries for nesting and breeding. Most of the fish and shellfish eaten in the United States, including salmon, herring, and oysters, complete at least part of their life cycles in.

An estuary is a coastal area where fresh water from rivers and streams mixes with salt water from the ocean. Many bays, sounds, and lagoons along coasts are estuaries. Portions of rivers and streams connected to estuaries are also considered part of the estuary. The land area from which fresh water drains into the estuary. The book furnishes a basic understanding of the tectonic framework, hydrographic regime, climatic setting, and geologic materials that determine the morphology of a coast. estuaries, lagoons, deltas, glaciated coasts, rocky coasts and many others. Beaches and Coasts provides the necessary content for teaching a broad coastal geology course.
